The Missouri Southern men's basketball team took a one-point lead into the second half today, but was outscored by six by Northern State in the second and fell 74-69 in the season opener at the Sanford Pentagon Tipoff Classic.
The Lions (0-1) were led by 16 points from Taevaunn Prince who shot 4-5 from the free-throw line and added three rebounds in 30 minutes. Lane Barlow, playing in his first action since injuring his leg, scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting in 27 minutes of play. Austin Wright was a perfect 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from long-range, scoring 11 points. Blaine Miller had a game-high nine rebounds in 16 minutes.
Northern State (1-0) had four score in double-figures led by 16 from Carter Evans.
The Lions scored the first five points of the game as Miller opened up with a layup and Prince added a three-point play to give Southern an early lead.
A pair of buckets from the Wolves cut the lead to one, but another three-point play from the Lions gave Southern an 8-4 lead at the 16 minute mark. Southern led by nine (26-17) after a three from Prince with 7:33 to go in the half, and the lead was ten (36-26) after a layup from Barlow with 2:31 left in the half.
NSU, however, closed the half on a 10-1 run to cut the lead to one (37-36) at the break.
The Lions' bench outscored NSU 17-8 in the frame, but the Wolves scored seven points off of four Lions turnovers.
NSU scored first and took a 39-37 lead to open the half, but a free-throw from Greg Renfroe at the 15:39 mark tied the game at 44. Both teams traded leads for the next six minutes before a layup from the Wolves' Evans put NSU on top 56-55 with 8:56 to go in the game. NSU pushed its lead to seven twice, the last at 68-61 on a jumper from Darin Peterka and the Wolves would hold on for the win.
The Lions shot 43 percent from the field and 40 percent from long-range. NSU scored 13 points off of 12 Lions' turnovers, and the Lions held advantages in both second chance points and fast break points. The Southern bench outscored NSU 37-21.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, hooking up with Sioux Falls at 2 pm from the Sanford Pentagon.
