The Missouri Southern men's basketball team shot 56 percent from the field and 55 percent from long range and the Lions got 19 points from Austin Wright in a 93-83 win over Saint Mary in the 2014 Freeman Sports Medicine/Chris Tucker Memorial Classic.
Southern (2-2) shot lights-out in the first half, going 67 percent from the field and 73 percent from long-range. Wright led all scorers with 19 points on 6-9 shooting and 4-7 from long-range. Cameron Cornelius had 16 points on 5-8 shooting, while Taevaunn Prince scored 15 on a perfect 3-3 from three-point range. Lane Barlowscored 13, while Greg Renfroe added ten.
Saint Mary (4-3) had three score in double figures, led by 15 points from Jordan Thomas.
Both teams traded baskets for the first part of the opening frame, before a three from Bruce Marshall opened up a two-point lead for the Lions (20-18) with 12 minutes to go. A jumper from Wright with 10:51 left made the score 25-18, while a pair of free-throws from Charlie Brown with 9:09 left in the half gave the Lions a 29-18 lead.
The lead was 12 (32-20) after a three from Brown with 7:36 to go, and a dunk from Cornelius with five seconds to go in the half made the score 51-34 at the break.
Saint Mary clawed away at the Lions' lead in the second half, getting to within four (77-73) with 5:36 left in the game after a pair of free-throws from Thomas, and again at 87-83 after another free-throw from Thomas with just under a minute left in the game. But the Lions went on a 6-0 run to end the game on free-throws from Prince and Barlow.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow evening when Southern plays host to Mid-America Christian. Tipoff from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 5 pm.
