Birmingham, Ala -- Missouri Southern sophomore distance runner Vincent Kiprop won his third national championship tonight as he blistered the field to win the 5,000 meters in day one of the 2017 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships inside the Birmingham Cross Plex.
Kiprop not only broke his own Missouri Southern record by more than nine seconds, he broke the Division II National Championship meet record by two seconds and it was the third-fastest time in Division II history of the event. His time of 13:42.42 was 14 seconds faster than second-place. It is also the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this year, all divisions.
Kiprop trailed the lead runner by nearly seven seconds with less than five laps left in the race, but with two laps left, took the lead and had his second-fastest lap of the race in the final lap to cruise to the win. Kiprop now has national championships in the indoor 5k, the outdoor 10k and cross country.
Also in action today, junior throwers Bryan Burns and Junior Joseph 14th and 15th, respectively in the weight throw. Burns threw a distance of 58-10, while Joseph threw a distance of 58-04. Freshman Jordyn Manier finished in 13th in the long jump with a distance of 23-02.00.
Tomorrow, Allie Heckemeyer will compete in the pentathlon with her first event beginning at 11:05 am. Kennan Harrison will compete in the triple jump at 11:55 am, while Emily Presley will compete in the pole vault at 3:30 pm.
