MSSU softball splits in first day of Mathis-Zenner Tournament

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions Softball team split their opening pair of game in the 2017 Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Game One
In the opening game of the day it became a pitcher's duel with no score until extra innings. Upper Iowa (3-8) scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth with a RBI bunt that scored a runner from third and RBI single to left center.

Southern got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on a single to center from sophomore Angel Badalamenti that scored junior Myranda Stewart, who reached on an error. With runners on first and second and one out the Lions could not push across the second run to fall 2-1 to Upper Iowa.

Badalamenti went 3-for-3 at the dish with a RBI and freshman Erika Lutgen was 2-for-4. Senior Sydney Koch went seven and a third innings allowing the two runs, both earned, on five hits with three strike outs and one walk. Sophomore Taurean Guzman pitched two-thirds in relief and allowed just one hit on four pitches.

Game Two
The second game of the day, this one against McKendree (10-7), was the opposite as Southern scored early and often on their way to a 5-3 win. The Lions got things started in the bottom of the first with a two out two on single to right field by Lutgen that scored Stewart and an error on the Bearcats' right fielder allowed junior Shelby Friend to score from first. In the second inning Southern tacked on another run on a RBI single thru the left side by senior Sarah Morrison that scored sophomore Ashley Caldarella. In the third, Caldarella got in on the RBI party with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Friend to make it 4-0.

McKendree got one run back in the top of the fifth on a RBI double to right center that scored a runner from first. The Lions got that run back in the home half of the inning on their own RBI double to right center, by Stewart, that scored Morrison.

The Bearcats got a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth to make it 5-2 and scored on a fielding error by the Lions in the top of the seventh to make the final score 5-3.

Stewart went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and a run scored while Friend finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Morrison, Lutgen, and Caldarella each had a RBI.

Guzman got the start and went six and a third allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with four strike outs. Freshman Mikaela Cox pitched two-thirds in relief for the save and allowed no runs and faced just one McKendree batter that hit into a game ending double play.
