MSSU baseball splits final two games at Emporia State

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team lost game one on a walk-off home run, but the Lions returned the favor in game two, using a go-ahead long ball to win the game as the Lions split a pair of games today in Emporia.

Southern (12-9, 5-4 MIAA) lost the opener which was being completed from yesterday's game two that was suspended due to cold weather and snow. In this game, the Lions led 3-1 coming into today, but Emporia (15-4, 5-1 MIAA) used a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to tie it up and a home run in the ninth to win it.

Richie Gorski, Brett Graham and Mike Million had RBIs in game one as Dan Hawk went five innings yesterday and threw two thirds of an inning today before Colin Chandler came in to finish up the game. Hawk struck out three and walked just one as he allowed only two earned runs for the no-decision. Chandler allowed just three hits and one run as he struck out two and walked none, but fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss.

In game two, the Lions used a pair of home runs from Tyler Sutherland, the last coming in the top of the 11th, to take the series finale from the Hornets 9-8. Dave Prost had a huge game at the plate with two home runs, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored, while going 3-6 at the plate. Sutherland drove in four, while scoring twice, and going 2-5 at the dish. Gorski, Joe Paulino and Trever Burkdoll had a pair of hits each, while Max Hogan and Gorski scored twice and Burkdoll once.

The Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Prost's first home run in the fourth cut the lead to two. ESU, however, added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-1 after four. A four-run fifth for the Lions highlighted by an RBI from Gorski and a three-run homer from Prost made the score 7-5 after five.

Southern added three more runs in the sixth to go up 8-7 on Sutherland's first homer and another RBI from Gorski.

ESU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and neither team scored until Sutherland's opposite field home run in the 11th.

The Lions will be back in action Tuesday afternoon. Originally stated to play a pair of seven-inning games at Maryville in St. Louis, the Lions will now play those games at Warren Turner Field in Joplin. First pitch of the double-header is slated for 1 pm.
