(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions Softball team split on the final day of the 2017 Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament falling 5-1 to Maryville University before bouncing back for the 5-0 win over Drury Sunday afternoon at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Game One
All of the scoring in the opening game came in the second inning. The Maryville (8-7) Saints used a pair of doubles over Southern's senior right fielder Sarah Morrison's head to plate five runs. In the home half of the second sophomore Angel Badalamenti laced a two out ground rule double to right center then scored on two straight wild pitches for the 5-1 score.

Senior Sydney Koch pitched just one inning of work allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits with a walk. Sophomore Taurean Guzman came in the second after the pair of doubles to right and pitched six innings in relief allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

The Lions tallied just three hits with Badalamenti going 1-for-2 and junior Abi Corbett and freshman Erika Lutgen gathering the other two hits, both singles.

Game Two
In the final game of the tournament it was Southern (8-13) who jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first with four runs. A bases loaded wild pitch, a bases loaded passed ball, and a two RBI single up the middle from sophomore Ashley Caldarella accounted for all four runs in the opening frame. The Lions added one more in the sixth when Corbett scored on junior Myranda Stewart's single through the left side to make it 5-0.

Freshman Mikaela Cox went the distance for the Lions allowing just six hits with only one walk.

On The Weekend
Badalamenti led the Lions offensive attack on the weekend going 5-for-10 with a double, a RBI, and two runs scored. Stewart finished the weekend 5-for-14 at the dish with a pair of RBIs, a double, and three runs scored. Junior Shelby Friend also scored three runs while Caldarella led the team in RBIs with three. Corbett also led the team in stolen bases going 3-for-3 while the Lions as a team were a perfect 5-for-5.

Cox made good on both appearances inside the circle this weekend going seven and two-thirds not allowing a run (0.00 ERA) and walking just one while giving up just one extra base hit, a controversial triple down the left field line. Guzman made three appearances with 13 innings of work allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with seven strike outs and a ERA of 2.15.

The Lions will be back in action this coming Friday and Saturday as they open MIAA play at Washburn and Emporia State.
