Bolivar, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Baseball team got a great start from Seth Mesey, but couldn't get the bats going, as the Lions fell 3-2 today in the series opener at Southwest Baptist.
Southern (19-13, 11-7 MIAA) got a pair of hits each from Tyler Sutherland and Brett Graham, while Sutherland drove in a run and Graham scored once. Danny Biggs had a hit, while Richie Gorski had a hit and an RBI. Dave Prost scored a run and Alec Alvarez had a hit.
Mesey started and went all eight innings, allowing just seven hits and three runs, while striking out two and walking one.
SBU (19-9, 9-7 MIAA) got a home run from Hunter Hisky, while Caleb Sneed went 2-4.
The Bearcats got on top with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Lions answered right back with a run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Gorski.
The Bearcats got two runs in the sixth and the Lions answered back with an RBI from Sutherland in the seventh, but couldn't complete the comeback.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow with a double-header beginning at noon.
