Joplin, Mo. -- A sacrifice bunt from Danny Biggs moved Jordan Moon to second, but the throw from the pitcher went down the right field line and Moon scored the winning run to give the Missouri Southern baseball team a 6-5, 12-inning win over visiting Missouri Western today at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (14-10, 6-4 MIAA) got a solid start on the mound from Seth Mesey as the junior went six and struck out two while walking just one and allowing four runs. Hayden Brauser threw two innings of relief, while Colin Chandler threw an inning and a third and Cody Smith picked up the win with the final two and two thirds.
The Lions had four with two hits each as Tyler Sutherland, Max Hogan, Joe Paulino and Danny Biggs had a pair of hits each. Dave Prost drove in two runs, while Brett Graham scored twice. Prost, Hogan and Sutherland all had doubles for the Lions.
Western (11-9, 8-2 MIAA) used seven pitchers in the game and had three hits each from Dusty Stroup, Ryan Smith and Nick Gawley.
Southern opened the scoring with a pair in the first on a two-RBI double from Prost.
The Griffons scored two in the second, two in the fifth and a run in the seventh to lead 5-2 after seven.
Southern answered back, however with three runs in the eighth to tie it up. Richie Gorski led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season and Todd Hinkley doubled down the left field line to score Graham. Biggs added an RBI single to score Cory Canterbury and tie the game at five.
Neither team scored until the Lions pushed across the winning run in the 12th on Biggs' sacrifice bunt. Paulino led off the inning with a single to deep short and was replaced by Moon as a pinch runner. Biggs' bunt was fielded cleanly, but thrown down the line to allow Moon to score.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
