MSSU softball splits doubleheader with Washburn

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Topeka, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Softball Lions out hit Washburn, but split their MIAA double header Friday afternoon at the Washburn Softball Complex.

In the opening game both teams were deadlocked at 0-0 until the fourth when Washburn used a RBI double down the left field line to go up 1-0. The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh when sophomore Angel Badalamenti reached on a suicide squeeze play that scored junior Abi Corbett to send the game into extra innings. In the tenth, using the international tie breaker rule, Badalamenti executed a sacrifice bunt to move fellow sophomore Ashley Caldarella to third before a sac fly from junior Shelby Friend scored Caldarella to give the Lions their first lead of the day at 2-1.

Washburn tied the game in the home half of the tenth with a RBI single to center field to make it 2-2. In the 11th, freshman Kaycee Hodgson executed the sacrifice bunt to move sophomore Taurean Guzman to third before a sac fly from sophomore Kylie Wesbrooks drove in the winning run to make it 3-2.

Senior Sarah Morrison led the Lions in the opening game going 2-for-4 at the plate while Badalamenti, Friend, and Wesbrooks has the three RBIs.

Freshman Mikaela Cox got the start for Southern in the circle going six and a third innings allowing one run, earned, on seven hits with no walks and one strike out. Guzman pitched four and two-thirds in relief to get the win allowing one run, unearned, on one hit with a walk and two strike outs.

In the second game of the twin bill the Lions got out to the early 3-0 lead with a pair of RIB doubles one down the left field line by Friend and one to right center by freshman Emily Harris. Washburn plated a run in the home half of the second to make it 3-1 on their own double to right center, before the Lions got that run back in the fourth with a RBI single to right center by Badalamenti.

Washburn then proceeded to score seven runs in the home half of the fourth to make it an 8-4 ball game, but the Lions were not done yet. Southern chipped away at the lead scoring one in the sixth on a RBI ground out by Badalamenti and had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh with three straight hit by pitches. With two outs and the bases loaded Corbett drew a RBI walk to make it 8-6 before the rally fell short one batter later on a foul out to the Ichabod first baseman.

Corbett and Harris had multi-hit games for the Lions, both went 2-for-3, while Harris and Badalamenti each drove in two runs.

Guzman got the start and went two innings allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and a strike outs. Senior Sydney Koch pitched one and a third in relief allowing four runs, all earned, on two hits with a pair of walks, and Cox pitched two and two-thirds in relief allowing just two Washburn hits with no walks and one strike out.

Up next for the Lions will be the Hy-Vee Classic hosted by Missouri Western March 17-19. Live stats for those games can be followed at mssulions.com
