Koch tosses complete game, homers leading MSSU to split at Hy-Vee Classic

St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions split the final pair of games at the Hy-Vee Classic hosted by Missouri Western on Sunday morning/afternoon at the Heritage Sports Complex.

In the opening game of the final day the Softball Lions fell 6-0 to Upper Iowa. The Peacocks held Southern to six hits with two coming from junior Abi Corbett. Freshman Mikaela Cox pitched two innings for the Lions allowing three runs, one earned, on three this while sophomore Taurean Guzman pitched five innings in relief also giving up three runs, one earned, but on seven hits. Both pitchers combined for two strike outs.

The final game of the weekend saw Southern scratch and claw their way back to defeat Northern State University out of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Wolves jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI single to right field. Southern answered back in the home half of the fourth with red-shirt sophomore Bailey Skelton drawing a bases loaded two out walk to score freshman Erika Lutgen to tie the game at 1-1.

Northern State broke the tie in the top of the fifth with a lead off walk to Lauren Kunz scored on a double to center by Shayla Steinley to make it 2-1 Wolves. The scored stayed that way until the home half of the sixth with two outs freshman Emily Harris smoked a line drive back up the middle to bring up senior Sydney Koch, the Lions' starting pitcher. Koch took a 1-0 pitch down the left field line for her third home run of the season and gave Southern the 3-2 win.

Koch went the distance in the finale allowing just the two runs, both earned, on eight hits with a walk and five strike outs.

On The Weekend
Junior Myranda Stewart led the offensive attack for Southern going 10-for-18 (.556) at the plate with four runs, two doubles, a grand slam, and five RBIs. Harris also had five RBIs as she finished 7-for-17 (.412). Corbett tied Stewart for the team lead in hits with 10 while sophomore Ashley Caldarella led the team in doubles with three. Stewart also led Southern in slugging percentage, .833, and on base percentage, .579, on the weekend,

Koch had the highlight of the weekend in the circle with a ERA of 1.40 in three appearances. Koch tossed the complete game winner against Northern State on Sunday and recorded a save against Wayne State on Saturday with one inning of relief work. In her 10 innings if work she allowed just two runs, both earned, on 10 hits with a walk and five strike outs and held her opponents to a .263 batting average

Southern will open their home MIAA schedule on Wednesday March 22nd as they host the Jennies of Central Missouri in a double header. First pitch at the Pat Lipira Softball Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
