Topeka, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Men's Golf team opens their 2017 spring season at the Washburn Invitational Monday and Tuesday March 13 and 14 at the Topeka Country Club.
The 16 team event is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start on Monday with 36 holes, and conclude on Tuesday with 18 holes. Participating teams include Central Missouri, Lincoln, Bemidji State, St. Cloud State, Bethany, Missouri Western, Augustana, Iowa Western, Fort Hays State, Upper Iowa, Missouri Southern, Rockhurst, Minnesota- Crookston, William Jewell, and Southwest Baptist. The Topeka Country Club golf course is a par-71, 6,647 course with 18 holes.
Representing the Lions are senior Taylor Lansford, junior Connor Neil, sophomores Tristan Haltom and Tripper Jensen, and freshman Chase Rogers. Lansford will be making his sixth appearance this season for Southern and in the previous 12 rounds of play has a scoring average of 73.2 (1-over) with his highest finish, tied for second, at the Lindenwood Invitational where he carded a three round 212 (74-72-66) for 1-under. Lansford's lowest score came at the MSSU Fall Invitational at Shangri-La where he carded a three round total of 214 (71-71-72) for 2-under and a share of fourth place.
Neil will also be making his sixth appearance for the Lions this season with a scoring average of 74.8 (3-over) in his previous 12 rounds. Neil's highest finish of the fall season was at the MSSU Fall Invitational at Shangri-La where he finished with a 216 (73-68-75) for even par ans a share of seventh place.
Haltom will be making just his fourth appearance of the 2016-17 season at Washburn after missing two tournaments in the fall due to injury. In his previous seven rounds, Haltom averaged 75.7 (4-over) with his highest finish coming at the UNK Invitational, a MIAA points event, where he placed tied for 14th at 3-over (147).
Jensen is making just his third appearance for the Lions with this previous two at the MSSU Fall Invitational at Shangri-La and the JR Watkins Invitational hosted by Winona State in the fall. Jensen's five round scoring average is 78.4 (6-over) and highest finish was tied for 41st at the MSSU Fall Invitational.
Rogers is making his fifth appearance as a true freshman for coach Mike Wheeler. Rogers' lowest score and highest finish came at the MSSU Fall Invitational at Shangri-La with an 8-over 224 (78-72-74) for a share of 25th.
