Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team got a 4-5 day at the plate from Richie Gorski and Tyler Sutherland delivered a game-winning RBI single in the eighth as the Lions defeated Nebraska-Kearney 7-6 in game one of the series today at Warren Turner Field.
The Lions (9-7, 2-2 MIAA) hit four home runs on the day, one off the bat of Gorski as he went 4-5 with a run and an RBI. Brett Graham, Dave Prost and Max Hogan hit home runs, as well with Prost scoring three times and Hogan driving in three. It was Hogan's ninth home run of the season, while Graham hit number two and Prost hit his third.
Seth Mesey started for the Lions and went six and two thirds, striking out four and walking just one. Hayden Brauser threw two thirds of an inning in relief and Cody Smith threw the final inning and two thirds to pick up his second win of the season.
UNK (7-6, 0-1 MIAA) got three hits from Dallas Schramm and Matt Salamon drove in three.
UNK scored two runs in the second and one in the third to go up 3-0 early on.
The Lions answered back with a solo shot from Prost in the third, followed up by a two-run bomb from Hogan to tie the game at three.
An RBI double from Hogan in the fifth put the Lions up 4-3, but two runs from the Lopers in the top of the seventh gave UNK a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Southern scored two runs in the frame on homers from Gorski and Graham to go back up 6-5, before UNK tied it back in the top of the eighth at six each. Sutherland's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Prost proved to be the game-winner.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Turner Field is slated for 2 pm.
