Emporia, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Softball Lions dropped their opening pair of MIAA games on Thursday evening to Emporia State at Turnbull Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
In the opening game of the evening Southern (8-15, 0-2 MIAA) fell 6-2 to the Hornets (15-11, 2-0 MIAA). Emporia State used a three run, only one earned, first inning to jump out to the early 3-0 lead and built a 6-0 lead headed into the sixth. In the top of the sixth inning the Lions struck for their only runs of the night with a RBI single from sophomore Angel Badalamenti that scored junior Shelby Friend and freshman Kaycee Hodgson doubled home fellow freshman Erika Lutgen.
Southern tallied nine hits in the opening game with Badalamenti and Hodgson each getting two. Senior Sarah Morrison, junior Abi Corbett, Lutgen, sophomore Ashley Caldarella and Koch had the other five hits.
Senior Sydney Koch got the start in the circle in game one allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits in the opening inning. Sophomore Taurean Guzman pitched six innings in relief allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits with no walks.
In the night cap the Hornets used a six run fourth inning to come away with the 6-0 win. Southern gathered just three hits with Friend, Caldarella, and junior Myranda Stewart getting the three hits.
Freshman Mikaela Cox got the start for The Green & Gold going three and two-thirds innings allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits with a pair of strike outs. Guzman pitched two and a third scoreless innings in relief allowing just three hits with five strike outs and no walks.
Southern will wrap up their MIAA opening trip at Washburn Friday afternoon, First pitch from Topeka is scheduled for 1 p.m.
