MSSU golf tied for fourth after opening round at Broncho Invitational

Oklahoma City, Okla. - The Missouri Southern Men's Golf Team sits in a tie for fourth following the opening round of the Broncho Invitational presented by RCB Bank Monday afternoon at the Gaillardia Country Club.

Senior Taylor Lansford led Southern into the clubhouse with a 2-over 74 and is tied for sixth. Lansford had birdies on the 204 yard par three fourth hole, 403 yard par four seventh hole, and the 508 yard par five 18th. Junior Connor Neil and freshman Chase Rogers are among 11 golfers tied for 29th with a five over 77. Neil collected one birdie on the day at the 556 yard par five sixth hole while Rogers picked up a pair of birdies on on the sixth hole and 363 yard par four 11th. Senior Cameron Hamilton finished with a seven over 79 and tied Lansford for the most birdies in the round with three. Hamilton's birdies came on hole six, the 208 yard par three 15th, and the 449 par four 16th. Senior Phillip Roller rounded out the team with a 10-over 82 and picked up a birdie on the 345 yard par four second hole.

"We definitely left some puts out there today and made a few bad decisions, however we are pleased with where we are as a team," said head coach Mike Wheeler. "The guys are engaged and we are going to give the second round all we have."

Lansford is tied for the lead in the par three scoring averaging 3.0 on those holes and is tied 16th in par four scoring with an average of 4.18 per par four.

Thirtieth ranked Central Missouri leads the team standings with a first round 11-over 299. Southern Nazarene sits in second after an opening round of 301, 13-over, while 29th ranked Henderson State finished three strokes back at 16-over 304. Texas A&M International and the Lions are tied for fourth at 19-over 307 followed by the hosts and 42nd ranked Central Oklahoma, Washburn, and Arkansas-Monticello all tied at 309 (21-over). Arkansas-Fort Smith sits in night with a 310, 21-over, and Southwest Baptist rounds out the top 10 with a 315. Eleven through 17 goes Southwest Baptist (315), 46th ranked Southwestern Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Christian (317), Missouri Western and Lincoln (320), Southern Arkansas (321), and Newman (332).

UCM's Travis Simmons and Oklahoma State's Nick Heinen are tied for the individual medalist with a 2-under 70. Jared Burns of Washburn, Brendon Jelley of Oklahoma State and 35th ranked Sam Stevens of Oklahoma State are tied for third at 1-over. Lansford is tied with nine others for a share of sixth at 2-over.

The second round of the Broncho Invitational presented by RCB Bank will begin shortly. Southern will once again be paired with Henderson State and Oklahoma Christian for the final round. Live results can be found at mssulions.com.
