Joplin, Mo. -- A sacrifice fly from Alec Alvarez started a four-run eighth inning and the Missouri Southern baseball team took out visiting Nebraska-Kearney 10-6 today inside Warren Turner Field.
Southern (10-7, 3-2 MIAA) has won the first two games of the series over the Lopers (7-7, 0-2 MIAA). Brett Graham led the Lions offensively with a 2-5 day at the plate, driving in three. Max Hogan went 4-4 with a run scored, while Dave Prost had a home run, two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Todd Hinkley went 1-4 with a homer and two runs scored while Richie Gorski drove in a run and scored once and Mike Million scored once.
Dan Hawk started and went 5.2 innings, striking out six and walking just two. Hayden Brauser thre a third of an inning in relief, while Colin Chandler threw two innings to move to 2-0 on the seaosn. Chandler struck out three and held the Lopers scoreless. Cody Smith threw the ninth, striking out two.
The Lopers got three hits each from Scott Platt, Ricky Trammell and Matt Salamon.
UNK went on top 2-0 going into the bottom of the second, before a home run from Prost tied the game at two. An RBI from Graham in the third, put the Lions up 3-2 and a Sutherland RBI in the fourth made the score 4-2.
The Lopers added a run in the fifth to get within one at 4-3, but Hinkley's two-run homer gave the Lions 6-3 lead after five. The Lopers scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game back up at six, before the Lions' four-run eighth.
With the bases-loaded, Alvarez drove in Million with a sacrifice fly. Sutherland was interntionally walked to load the bases. Gorski drove home Prost with a sacrifice fly, and Hogan was intentionally walked to load the bases again. Graham then drove home both Sutherland and Danny Biggs with a single to left.
The two teams will finish up the series tomorrow with a 12 pm first-pitch.
