Sallie Beard inducted into Missouri Sports Hall of Fame

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Springfield, Mo. -- Former Missouri Southern coach and Athletic Director Sallie Beard was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame today as part of the fourth-annual Women's Sports Luncheon presented by the Bee Payne-Stewart Foundation.

The induction ceremony took place at the University Plaza Hotel & Convention Center. Beard was one of four individuals going into the Hall of Fame, joining Evangel University women's basketball coach Leon Neal, former Missouri women's basketball coach Joann Rutherford, and former Lockwood High School volleyball coach Cheryl Shores. The Hall also honored Jodie Adams with the President's Award, as well as recognize eight individuals of the inaugural Wynn Award, named after longtime Missouri State Administrator Dr. Mary Jo Wynn.

"If you had told me when I was a student at Missouri Southern that I would have been fortunate enough to have the career that I would have, I wouldn't have believed you," Beard said. "As I reflect on my career I feel very fortunate to have the breadth of experience I was afforded. I am humbled and honored by the Missouri sports hall of fame deciding to recognize my career."

Beard served Missouri Southern State University as both coach and Athletic Director for 37 years before her retirement in 2009. She single-handedly created women's athletics at Missouri Southern when she started the first women's sports teams, serving as head coach of basketball, softball, tennis, and track and field. For 25 years, she was the Women's Athletic Director. In 2001, she was named the first Athletic Director to oversee both the men's and women's athletic programs at MSSU.

Always one to lead by example, Beard served on numerous NCAA Division II committees, among them: Degree Completion, Convention and Planning, Identity, Nominating and Voting, and Athlete Reinstatement. She served on the association-wide NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, where she was assigned the responsibility of developing Title IX interpretive language for the Office of Civil Rights. From 2005 to 2009 she was a member of the Division II Management Council. Beard has also been a leader in the MIAA, serving as vice president before her election in 1999 to a two-year term as Conference President, the first athletics director to be chosen for that position.

Beard helped usher in a new era in MSSU Athletics when the university moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and the MIAA in 1989. She oversaw significant facility improvements at Southern, most notably the Lionpride Restoration Project, adding new turf, lighting, and track and field surfaces to Fred G. Hughes Stadium; the construction of the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center (a basketball and indoor track facility); and the Lea Kungle and Gene Wild softball fields. Missouri Southern consistently ranked among the best academically in the MIAA. Under Beard's leadership, athletes recorded an Academic Success Rate of 87 percent, a full 36 percent higher than the general student population at MSSU.

In 2014 Beard was awarded the Nike Lifetime Achievement Award by NACWAA, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators. She is a member of the Missouri Southern State University Athletics Hall of Fame, Joplin Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2010 she was inducted into the inaugural class of the MIAA Hall of Fame.

After her retirement, Beard's administrative skills were once again called into action. Following the 2011 tornado that struck Joplin, she became deeply involved in the rebuilding effort, organizing housing for the many volunteers who came to her city. In 2015 Beard was appointed to the Joplin Schools Board of Education. She is a member of Kiwanis and serves as a volunteer with the United Way Circles of Joplin.

Beard and her late husband Larry are the parents of two children, Meghan Klosterman and Andrew Beard, and five grandchildren.

"This is a very well-deserved honor for someone that has dedicated such a large part of her life to supporting the Green and Gold like Sallie has," said MSSU Athletic Director Jared Bruggeman. "Sallie was part of the athletic department for 37 years and she can be looked at as one of the pioneers of women's athletics at Missouri Southern as well as in the world of women's collegiate athletics. Her hard work, particularly early in her career has helped pave the way for many student-athletes over our school's history."

Beard is now the sixth former coach/administrator or student-athlete from Missouri Southern to be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. She joins Tom Rutledge, Dr. Pat Lipira, Robert Corn, Warren Turner and Rod Smith.

"Sallie Beard interviewed & hired me in 1981," Lipira said. "She is the primary reason that I remained at MSSU for my entire career. What an amazing pioneer and role model for young women! This is an honor long overdue."

MSSU softball uses long ball to sweep Nebraska-Kearney

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Hastings, Neb. - The Missouri Southern Softball Lions completed the four-game "weekend" road sweep with a pair of extra inning wins over Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon at the Smith Softball Complex.

The Lions traveled to Hastings, Neb. after the Nebraska-Kearney softball field was determined to wet for play after having their weekend series moved from Friday and Saturday to Thursday at Fort Hays State and Friday against UNK.

In the first game, Southern (17-24, 6-6 MIAA) got things going in the first inning with a two-run home run from junior Myranda Stewart that scored senior Sarah Morrison who reached on a 3-2 walk.

Nebraska-Kearney (6-32, 3-9 MIAA) got one run back in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left by Halle Gydesen. The Lions answered right back in the top of the third with a RBI ground out by Stewart that scored junior Abi Corbett. Corbett reached on an error by the Lopers' third baseman to lead off the inning.

The score stayed 3-1 in favor of Southern until the bottom of the seventh with a dropped fly ball in right led to a game tying home run from Molly Stern with two outs.

The Lions answered in the top of the extra frame that started with a walk to sophomore Ashley Caldarella. Following a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Angel Badalamenti that moved Caldarella to second, Caldarella was advanced to third by a wild pitch. A ground ball to the UNK second baseman by freshman Erika Lutgen gave Southern the 4-3 lead.

The home half of the eighth saw UNK threaten with runners on first and second and one out before a pitching change by Lions' head coach Melissa Chmielewski. Chmielewski brought in sophomore Taurean Guzman to relieve senior Sydney Koch and Guzman promptly got two ground ball outs to end the game.

Stewart accounted for three of the four Southern runs going 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Koch got the win going seven and a third innings allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits with four strike outs. Guzman pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief for the save.

In the "night cap" it was UNK that got on the board first with a two-run home run in the home half of the second by Emilee Jonas.

Southern managed just two hits off the UNK starter, Sara Sempek, until the top of the sixth. The Lions threatened in the sixth with runners on the corners and two outs, after a pair of infield singles, but UNK got out of the jam with a fly ball to left off the bat of the MSSU pinch hitter, freshman Emily Harris.

In the seventh the Lions did a little more than just threaten as they plated a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly to center from junior Shelby Friend and Badalamenti scoring on a wild pitch to force the extra inning.

In the eighth, Morrison got things going with a one out single to center and stole second. Freshman Elizabeth Windsor moved Morrison to third on a single to right before both Lions scored on Stewart's second home run of the day to make the final 5-2.

Southern got things started in the second inning with a double to left center from junior Shelby Friend that scored sophomore Angel Badalamenti. Sophomore Kylie Wesbrooks stepped into the batter's box next and laced a double to center to score both Friend and freshman Erika Lutgen to make it 3-0.

Fort Hays state got a run back in the bottom half of the second with a RBI double of their own to cut the lead to 3-1 after two innings of play.

Freshman Elizabeth Windsor moved Morrison to third on a single to left and she also stole second on the next play.

Junior Myranda Stewart worked the count to 3-1 before sending a shot to deep left center for a two RBI double. Sophomore Ashley Caldarella laid down a bunt single that put runners on the corners with no outs. A single to right center on an 0-1 pitch by Badalamenti scored Stewart and chased the Fort Hays starting pitcher, Carrie Clarke, with the Lions leading 6-1.

The relief pitcher, Lexie Kimminau, was welcomed to the game with a sacrifice bunt by Lutgen that scored Caldarella. With no outs and runners on first and second Friend singled through the left side of the FHSU defense and scored Badalamenti from second to make it 8-1.

Wesbrooks grounded into a fielder's choice that put out Lutgen headed to third for the first out of the inning. Junior Abi Corbett walked to load the bases and brought up freshman Emily Harris to pinch hit for Morrison. During Harris' at bat the Lions scored one on a wild pitch and Harris would reach after a 2-2 strike out on another wild pitch that scored Wesbrooks for a 10-1 lead.

On the next pitch Harris stole second and a fielding error by the Tiger shortstop allowed Corbett to score from third to make it 11-1 at the end of the third.

Southern tacked one more run on in the fourth that was started by a single back to the FHSU pitcher by Badalamenti and a hit by pitch to Lutgen put runners on first and second with no outs. Friend came up to the plate looking for her third hit and third RBI of the game and sent a 1-0 pitch through the left side for just those to make it 12-1.

Following a Missouri Southern error in the bottom of the fourth, Tess Gray hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to make the final score 12-3.

Senior Sydney Koch went the five innings for the win allowing three FHSU runs, two earned, on five hits with a pair of strike outs.

In game two, Southern got things started in the first inning as they manufactured a run after Corbett led off with an infield single to third base and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Morrison. Corbett scored during Windsor's at bat when the throw on her stolen base sailed into left field.

Fort Hays would get the run back in the home half of the first with a RBI double down the left field line from Veronica Knittig.

The Lions broke the tie in the second with a solo home run from Caldarella and a RBI single to left from Wesbrooks, her third RBI on the day, to make it 3-1.

The Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the day at 4-3 before Wesbrooks connected on a double to right center in the top of the fourth for her fourth RBI of the day to tie the game at 4-4.

The scored stayed tied at 4-4 until the top of the sixth when Lutgen led off with a double to center and moved to third on a ground out from Wesbrooks. Corbett singled to left on the next at bat to score Lutgen before being thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.

With a 5-4 lead headed to the bottom of the sixth sophomore Taurean Guzman got the first FHSU batter to ground out to Stewart at second before Ashley Beavers singled up the middle. With Beavers on first Jeni Mohr flied out to left and Guzman got Bailey Kennedy to ground out to Caldarella to send the game to the seventh.

The Lions were poised to add at least another run in the top of the seventh until the FHSU second baseman, Lily Sale, climbed the ladder to rob Stewart of a double and a RBI and then doubled off Windsor at first to send the game into the home half of the seventh.

With a one out double to left center by Knittig, Missouri Southern head coach Melissa Chmielewski made a switch in the circle and brought in Koch to close out the game. Koch got Boxberger to go down looking and Candace Bollig to ground out back to the circle for the save.

Guzman went six and a third allowing four runs, all earned, on 10 hits with a walk and two strike outs.
