MSSU volleyball splits in Saturday competition

The Missouri Southern Volleyball team picked up a split today as the Lions lost in straight sets to No. 12 Washburn, but defeated Arkansas-Monticello 3-0 in the nightcap.

Against Washburn (15-1, 4-1 MIAA), the Lions (1-14, 0-4 MIAA) were led offensively by Alyx Gepford as she had five kills and hit .308 in the match. Callie Whetstone had four kills and six blocks, while Payton Graves and Monica White had three each. Bradyn Wall dished out 16 assists, while Bridgette Jaeger had 11 digs. The team had 11.5 blocks in the match.

Washburn was led by 16 kills each from Leanna Willer and Sarah Vicory.

In the match with UAM (6-7) the Lions hit .272 as a team. The Lions had eight team blocks in the match.

In set one against UAM, Southern fell behind 6-3 early on, but the Lions tied the set at 15 on a kill from Graves. The set was tied agin at 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, before the Lions took control. Southern scored five of the final seven points, including a kill from Graves to take the set.

in the second set, the Lions opened up an 8-4 lead early on and led 17-12 forcing a UAM timeout at each point. A kill from Gepford coming out of the second UAM timeout made the score 18-12 and cruised to the set win.

Set three saw a back-and-forth scoring effort from each team, but a kill from Graves gave the Lions a 17-15 lead to force a UAM timeout. UAM cut the lead to one (21-20) to force a Southern timeout, but the Lions scored four of the final five points to take the match.

Gepford had ten kills in the match, while Jaeger had nine kills, with five digs and four blocks. Whetstone added six kills and hit .333, while adding four blocks. Abby Finder dished out 33 assists and 12 digs, while Wiele had a team-high 13 digs. Wall had 11 digs of her own.

Southern will be back in action this Tuesday when the Lions play host to Southwest Baptist. First serve from Young Gym is slated for 7 pm.
