The Missouri Southern volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Emporia State squad as the Lions fell three sets to none. Individual set scores were 19-25, 20-25 and 13-25.
Southern (0-13, 0-3 MIAA) was led offensively from Callie Whetstone and Bridgette Jaeger as the pair had eight kills each. Whetstone had four blocks and hit .294 on the night.Monica White had six kills, while Alyx Gepford and Lauren Darby had five kills each. Abby Finder dished out 21 assists while Bradyn Wall had seven of her own and four digs. Katie Wiele had a team-high seven digs.
Emporia (7-6, 2-2 MIAA) hit .389 in the match and was led by Shalya Cotman with 12 kills. Josie Williams had 10 of her own.
Set one featured four tied scores and one lead change. The Lions tied the set at seven and got to within one at 9-8, but wouldn't get any closer. Set two saw the Lions go down 16-8 midway through, but Southern fought back and cut the lead to just two (17-15) after a kill from Darby. A kill from Jaeger cut the lead back to two (18-16) but that would be as close as they would get. Set three saw five tied scores, but ESU never trailed.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow when Southern plays host to a tri match with 12th ranked Washburn and Arkansas-Monticello. The Lions and Washburn will kick it off at 1 pm, with Washburn and UAM playing at 3 pm. Southern and UAM will round out the day with a 5 pm match. All matches will be played inside Young Gymnasium.
