MSSU volleyball falls to Central Missouri

The Missouri Southern volleyball team started strong, staying close in the first set, but eventually fell to 13th ranked Central Missouri tonight inside the Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg. Individual set scores were 22-25, 14-25 and 13-25.

The Lions (2-17, 1-7 MIAA) were led offensively by Bridgette Jaeger and Payton Graves as the pair had five kills each. Callie Whetstone had four kills, hit .500 and added five blocks. Abby Finder dished out 17 assists, while Katie Wiele had 20 digs. The Lions, as a team, had eight blocks.

Central Missouri (18-3, 6-2 MIAA) was led by Kylie Hohlen with ten kills and ten digs.

The Lions jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set, but Central tied it up at 11 midway through the frame and took a 14-12 lead a few points later. The Lions tied the set at 15 and 17, the latter after a kill from Whetstone. The Jennies scored four-straight points to lead 21-17 and force a Southern timeout. The Lions got as close as one (22-21) after a kill from Graves, but could not close out the set.

Set two had two tied scores and two lead changes, while the third set had only one tied score.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow night, traveling to St. Charles, Mo. to face off with Lindenwood. First serve is slated for 6 pm.
