The Missouri Southern State University drumline is headed back to Kauffman Stadium to help energize the crowds as the Kansas City Royals begin the American League Division Series on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The 20 members of the Royal Thunder drumline will entertain audiences during tailgate and pre-game activities and at the game itself on Thursday and during Game 2 on Friday, Oct. 8. The Royals will face either the New York Yankees or the Houston Astros, depending on the outcome of tonight’s Wild Card game.
Game 1 is set to begin at 7:07 p.m. Thursday, with Game 2 at 2:45 p.m. Friday.
During the Royals’ 2011 season, the group served as the team’s official drumline throughout the regular season and during the All-Star Game. In 2014, they performed during the playoff game versus the Oakland A’s, and during the home games as the Royals faced the San Francisco Giants for the World Series.
“The great thing about this entire project for our drumline and for our university is that we go out and get practical, hands-on experience no one else can say they give their kids,” said Brian Fronzaglia, director of athletic bands. “Playing at a college football game is great, but we will literally be the only drumline featuring on FOX, TBS and TNT for the MLB playoffs.”
Making quick arrangements to get a large group of students out of class and to Kansas City isn’t an easy task, and Fronzaglia credits the university’s support for making it possible.
“We’re very thankful to Dr. Paula Carson (provost/vice president of academic affairs) and our other administrators for supporting us in this project,” he said. “We have so many new members on the drumline this year that it required a little more support from the university.
“Everybody stepped up to the plate and now we have more students who will be able to experience this.”
