The Missouri Southern men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2015 MIAA Championships this Saturday at the Sand Plum Nature Trail in Hays, Kan.
The race is being hosted by Fort Hays State University. The women's 6k begins at 10 am and the men's 8k begins at 11 am. Both the Southern men's and women's teams are the defending MIAA Champs.
The Southern women come into the championships ranked fifth in the latest USTFCCCA Regional Rankings. Leading the Lions is Emily Harris, as the junior has a top time in the 5k this year of 17:34.80, ran at the Southern Stampede. She also ran a 17:37.24 at the University of Arkansas Chili Pepper Festival. The Lions have yet to run a 6k race this year. Southern finished second at both SBU and the Southern Stampede, while winning at Missouri S&T in the team's latest event.
Leading the men is freshman Vincent Kiprop. One of the top runners in the MIAA, as well as Division II this year, Kiprop has been the MIAA Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week twice this season. He won the Southern Stampede in a time of 24:15.96 throughout the 8k course. At the Arkansas Chili Pepper, Kiprop finished 11th, but was the third-fastest Non-DII runner in the race with a career-best time of 23:57.77 over 8k. Kiprop was also second at the Missouri S&T Jackling Jocks Invite two weeks ago. Southern finished third at SBU and was second at Missouri S&T.
Missouri Southern will serve as the host to both the 2015 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships, as well as the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championships.
