MSSU soccer falls to Northwest Missouri 2-1

The Missouri Southern Lions (2-8-0, 0-4-0 MIAA) fell 2-1 to Northwest Missouri (2-5-2, 1-3-0 MIAA) Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Pitch.

The Lions got the scoring started in the 16th minute as sophomore Taylor Beck netted her first goal of the season to the left post from 10 yards out following a cross from fellow sophomore Hannah Bomar and a touch by senior Karley Thomas. Southern led at the half and out shot Northwest Missouri 5-4 in the half.

The second half saw the Bearcats score the equalizer in the 50th minute as Anna Holden put home a rebound off her own missed shot. Northwest Missouri scored the game winning goal just five minutes later as Katelynn Lindsey put home a free kick from 25 yards out into the upper left 90.

In the final 13 minutes the Lions took three corner kicks and Beck's attempt to tie the game in the 88th minute sailed wide.

Beck led Southern with the one goal on three shots. Bomar, Thomas, senior Hannah Ishmael, and sophomore Carly Cecilaccounted for the other four shots for the Lions. Senior goalkeeper Shawnee Phillips played all 90 minutes in the net for the Lions allowing the two goals and coming up with six saves on the day.

Southern will be back in action on Thursday at Hal Bodon Field as they host the number one ranked Central Missouri Jennies in a 7pm tilt.
