The Missouri Southern volleyball team came a point from forcing a fifth and deciding set, but fell three sets to one at home to Fort Hays State. Individual set scores were 23-25, 21-25, 25-22, and 25-27.
The Lions (2-21, 1-11 MIAA) had three in double-figures for kills tonight led by 14 from Bridgette Jaeger. Jaeger added nine digs. Callie Whetstone had ten kills and seven blocks, whilePayton Graves had 12 kills. Bradyn Wall dished out 34 assists and added 13 digs, while Katie Wiele had a match-high 17 digs.Abby Finder had 13 digs.
Hays (17-11, 6-7 MIAA) had 15 kils each from Crystal Whitten and Mallory Flagor.
The Tigers took the first set in a frame that saw ten tied scores and three lead changes. After falling 25-21 in set two, Southern fought back and led from start to finish in the third set, taking the frame 25-22.
In the fourth set, the Lions trailed 14-7 early on, but got to within three (18-15) to force a Tigers' timeout. Southern took the lead 21-20 and forced another FHSU timeout, and the Lions had set point at 24-23. However, Hays scored the final two points in the set after a kill from Graves tied the set at 25.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Lions play host to Nebraska-Kearney at 4 pm inside Young Gymnasium. It will be Senior Day for the three Lions' seniors (Whetstone, Finder and Graves).
