MSSU's Vincent Kiprop repeats as National 10K champion

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Bradenton, Fla. -- Missouri Southern sophomore distance runner Vincent Kiprop repeated as a National Champion today in the 10,000 meters as the Lions competed in day one of the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Kiprop broke his own facility record that he set last year when he won the event. He finished in a time of 28:32.07, just 16 seconds off of his school record he set earlier in the year at the Mt. Sac Relays. Kiprop had a 4:28 first mile and broke away from the pack in the final 800m when he closed to the finish in a blistering 2:14 in the last two laps.

It is the fourth individual National Championship for Kiprop as he now has two in the outdoor 10k, one in the indoor 5k and was the 2016 cross country National Champion.

In other action today, Morgan Hold failed to record a height in the pole vault and Jordyn Manier faulted on two of his three attempts in the long jump.

Day two of the Championships will see Desirea Buerge start things off for the Lions with the discus at 2 pm (ET), while Bryan Burns will compete in the discus at 5 pm (ET). Morgan Smith will compete in the prelims of the 100m hurdles to end the day starting at 6:40 pm (ET).
