Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team took a lead in the 8th for the second time this weekend, but failed to hold on and lost 14-12 to Northeastern State University at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (26-24, 18-18 MIAA) however has qualified for the MIAA Baseball Tournament next weekend that will be hosted at Warren Turner Field on the Campus of Missouri Southern. The Lions will be the 8th seed and will take on the top seeded Emporia State at 4 pm on Thursday, May 11.
The Lions got another stellar day from Richie Gorski as the senior went 4-4 at the plate and had two runs scored an an RBI with four doubles, tying a Missouri Southern and MIAA single-game record with four doubles. Gorski shares the record with Wayne Wente (1993) and Brett Graham who did it last season against Pittsburg State.
Danny Biggs went 3-5 with an RBI, while Graham went 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Max Hogan had a hit and an RBI, while Tyler Sutherland had a home run and two runs and two RBIs. Joe Paulino had a home run and two RBIs, while Dave Prost had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored. Alec Alvarez had an RBI and a run scored.
Seth Mesey started and went five innings, striking out three. Zach Litchen threw two innings, while Will Bausinger threw an inning, as well. Cody Smith got the loss in relief, while Hayden Brauser and Dan Hawk threw a third of an inning each.
NSU (22-25, 15-20 MIAA) got four RBIs from Dakota Morse and three from Butch Rea.
The RiverHawks got on board first with a pair of rns in the opening inning. NSU added another run in the top of the second to go up 3-0, but an RBI double from Gorski in the second got the Lions within one.
Southern exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third to go up 6-3. An RBI from Prost followed by a pair of two-run homers from Graham and Paulino provided the offensive output.
Southern added another the fifth on a Sacrifice fly from Alvarez, but NSU scored three times in the sixth and once in the seventh and eighth to go up 8-7 going into the bottom of the eighth. The Lions responded in the eighth with an RBI bunt from Biggs and a two-run homer from Sutherland to go up 10-8 after eight.
The RiverHawks, however, scored six runs in the top of the ninth to take a 14-10 lead.
The Lions were not done as a two-RBI single from Hogan cut the lead to two (14-12) and the Lions had the bases loaded with one out but couldn't push home another run.
Southern will be back in action on Thursday afternoon as the Lions will take on Emporia State at 4 pm in the first-round of the 2017 MIAA Baseball Tournament at Warren Turner Field.
