Kiprop earns second straight MIAA High Point Honor, MSSU men finish third

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Missouri Southern sophomore Vincent Kiprop won his second-straight MIAA High Point Honor and the men's track and field team placed third overall as the Lions competed at the 2017 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships today.

Already the champion in the 10k, Kiprop won the 5k and was second in the 1,500m today to finish with 28 points and win the High Point Honor for the second-straight year. Kiprop ran a provisional time of 14:27.34 in the 5k to win by 25 seconds in the race, while running a new school record of 3:45.00 in the 1,500m to place second. The 1,500m time would have been quick enough for an NCAA Automatic Qualifying time in the event, but issues with the timing system resulted in hand times being used, thus nullifying his time for NCAA purposes. The time, however, does qualify for a new school record, breaking the previous mark set by Brennan Benkert in 2010 by a little over a second.

In all, the Lions picked up five All-MIAA performances today and had three event champions.

Dainel Hernandez repeated as javelin champion as he threw an NCAA AQ mark of 225-07 to earn All-MIAA status. Garrett Austin was seventh, while Derek Webb placed 12th.

Kennan Harrison won the triple jump with a distance of 48-04.75, while Brendan Watkins was third in a distance of 47-07, both earning All-MIAA honors for their efforts.

In other action, Keson Payton finished fifth in the 100m dash in a time of 10.66, while Matt Willis was fifth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 53.81. Nickson Kiptoo finished fourth in the 3k steeple in a provisional time of 9:16.27, while the 4x100m relay team of Dausen Gourley, Payton, Watkins and Thomas Hawkins placed second in a time of 41.16. The 4x400m relay team of Willis, Hawkins, Peyton Powell and Victor Encarnaciion finished eighth.

Bryan Burns placed fourth in the hammer, while Junior Joseph was ninth and Austin placed 12th.

The Lions placed third overall, but Lincoln and Central Missouri finished tied for first, just nine points in front of the Lions. Pittsburg State was fourth, followed by Fort Hays, Emporia State, Northwest Missouri, Nebraska-Kearney, Lindenwood, Washburn and Southwest Baptist to round out the team totals.

Southern will be back in action next Friday as the Lions play host to their own Last Chance Meet inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
