The Missouri Southern men's and women's track and field teams will head to Bolivar to take part in the 2017 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Southwest Baptist University this weekend.
The meet will start tomorrow with the decathlon beginning at 1 pm and the heptathlon begining at 1:30 pm. The remaining events of the multis will begin at 10 am on Saturday with the field events for the meet beginning at 1 pm on Saturday. Track events start at 4 pm on Saturday. The meet concludes at 11 am on Sunday.
The men come into the meet ranked eight nationally, but are the second-highest ranked MIAA team with Lincoln ranked seventh. Central Missouri is ranked 12th, while Pittsburg State is ranked 16th.
On the women's side, Pittsburg State is ranked second nationally, while Lincoln is 19th and Fort Hays is 22nd.
The Lions' men are the defending meet champions as the team scored 145 points to defeat Pittsburg State by 11 points. On the women's side, Pitt won the title by 40 points over Lincoln.
Vincent Kiprop has automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championships in both the 5k and the 10k, while Bryan Burns (Discus) and Daniel Hernandez (Javelin) have also punched their tickets. Jordyn Manier narrowly missed out on an AQ, but is ranked second nationally in the long jump.
On the women's side, Emily Presley is the national leader in the pole vault in Division II, eight inches in front of her nearest competition and is nearly two feet higher than any other MIAA pole vaulter this season. Desirea Buerge has also punched her ticket to nationals as the sophomore is sixth nationally in the discus.
