MSSU women place second at MIAA Championships

The Missouri Southern women's track and field team picked up three more All-MIAA honors and another MIAA Championship performance as the Lions placed second in the 2017 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. 

Emily Harris continued her dominance of the MIAA 1,500 meters as she won the event for the second-straight year. Harris won the event in a time of 4:35.57. Sierra Wells placed 8th in the event, earning points for the Lions. 

Cynthia Torres placed third in the 5k to earn All-MIAA honors in a time of 18:01.00. Wells and Sierra Gray placed 11th and 12th, respectively in the event. 

Morgan Smith picked up the other All-MIAA performance as she placed third in the 100m hurdles in a provisional time of 13.76, improving her school-record time in the event. 

In other action, Destiny Akannam was seventh in the 200m dash in a time of 24.57, and placed sixth in the 400m in a time of 56.85. Harris was eighth in the 800m in a time of 2:25.28, while Rachel Ray was sixth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:02.49. 

Gray was fifth in the 3k steeple in a time of 11:19.44, while the 4x100m relay team of Smith, Akannam, Kristen Koch and Ronise Miller placed fifth. The 4x400m relay team of Ray, Kelsey Evans, Koch and Smith was 8th. 

Allie Heckemeyer placed seventh in the long jump in a distance of 18-03.75, while Tiffany Gilford was 12th and Sierra Barrett was 16th. 

Halee Cashio placed tenth in the hammer with a distance of 143-10. 

The Lions placed second overall with 95 points, but Pittsburg State ran away with the title with 212 team points. Central Missouri was third, followed by Southwest Baptist, Fort Hays State, Lincoln, Emporia State, Northwest Missouri, Lindenwood, Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Kearney and Washburn to round out the team totals. 

The Lions will be back in action next Friday as Southern plays host to its Last Chance meet inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
