Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team was one out a way from the win, but a two-out home run from Northeastern State lifted the RiverHawks over the Lions, 3-2 in the series opener between the two teams.
Southern (25-23, 17-17 MIAA) got hits from Danny Biggs, Tyler Sutherland, Brett Graham and Richie Gorski in the game with RBIs from Biggs and Dave Prost. Cory Canterbury and Gorski scored runs.
Colin Chandler started and went seven strong, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out for but was saddled with a no-decision. Zach Litchen pitched a scoreless eighth and Cody Smith picked up a loss, allowing two runs in the ninth to move his record to 6-6 on the year.
NSU (21-24, 14-19 MIAA) got a 4-5 night from Jordan Payne with three RBIs and a home run. Dustin Berrong moved to 5-4 with a win in relief.
The RiverHawks scored a run in the thid on an RBI from Payne.
The Lions scored two runs in the eighth to go up 2-1 on RBIs from Biggs and Prost.
NSU, however, got a home run from Payne as the RiverHawks were down to their last out before the blast.
Southern threatened in the ninth, but left two on.
The two teams will be back in action Saturday with a 1 pm start at Warren Turner Field.
