Abi Corbett wins top award at MSSU Athletics awards ceremony

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern junior outfielder Abi Corbett was named the 2017 EO & Virginia Humphrey Award winner as the Missouri Southern Athletics Department put on its annual student-athlete awards ceremony Tuesday night.

Corbett won the department's highest honor, while men's track and field/cross country's Vincent Kiprop was the Male Athlete of the Year and women's track and field's Emily Presley was named the Female Athlete of the year.

Corbett, this season, led the nation in hits with 96, which set a new MSSU single-season record. On her way to that record, Corbett also set Southern single-season marks in at bats (212) and runs (56). She was a first-team All-MIAA pick this year after hitting .444 which ranks seventh-best all-time in a single season at MSSU.

Corbett does it off the field, as well as she maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA in marketing management at Southern. She has been a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll as well as an MIAA Scholar-Athlete and a member of the MSSU Dean's list. Corbett also helped out this year as the Vice-President with the MSSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee where the group helped put on such events like the Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat campaign, as well as working with the Miracle League, the Ronald McDonald House, and Foxberry Terrace Assisted Living.

Kiprop was the 2016 NCAA Division II National Champion in cross country. He was also the MIAA and Regional Champion as he was named the Division II Cross Country National Athlete of the Year, as well as the National Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He then went on to win the National Championship in the indoor 5k this spring and most recently, he was the MIAA High-Point winner at the 2017 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championshisp, winning the 3k and the 5k. He is the current MSSU school record holder in the indoor 3k and 5k, as well as the outdoor 1,500m, 5k and 10k. His school-record 10k time is the 11th-fastest time in the world this year.

Presley was the MIAA Champion in the indoor and outdoor pole vault this year. She is the current MSSU school record holder in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault and was an All-American in the indoor pole vault this year as she finished as the national runner-up. She currently has the highest-ranked pole vault this year in Division II by more than 11 inches and is more than 14 inches in front of her nearest competition in the MIAA. The mark of 14-06.25 is the third-best pole vault all-time in the history of Division II, while her mark of 14 feet in the indoor season is the ninth-best all-time in Division II history.

The department also gave out awards for community service. The team award went to women's basketball as the team averaged over 41 hours of community service per student-athlete. The individual award went to women's basketball's Chelsey Henry who had 207 hours herself, alone.
