(From MSSU Lions Athletic Update)
Missouri Southern junior Abi Corbett was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District team that was released today by CoSIDA.
To be selected for the award, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, as well as not being a first-year transfer to the institution. Student-athletes must also maintain a minimum of a 3.30 GPA, as well as participate in at least 50 percent of their team's competitions. The award is voted on by sports information professionals throughout Division II.
Missouri Southern is part of District 7, which puts the Lions up against student-athletes in the MIAA, the Great American Conference and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Corbett led all NCAA Divisions in hits with 96 as the Lions qualified for their first trip to the MIAA post-season tournament since 2011 as the fourth seed. Abi is a 4.0 student with a major in Marketing at Southern and was one of five MIAA players to be selected on the team. She will now advance to the ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-America Team later this month. The full District 7 Division II team is listed below.
The 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-District Softball Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
