The Missouri Southern volleyball team used both offense and defense tonight in a three sets to one defeat of visiting Lindenwood University. Individual set scores were 25-19, 30-32, 25-18 and 25-23.
The Lions (5-13, 2-8 MIAA) trailed 7-5 early in the first set, but went on a 6-1 run and forced a Lindenwood timeout. The lead was 18-15, Southern, forcing another Lindenwood (5-13, 2-8 MIAA) timeout, but Southern held the lead and won the opener.
Both teams traded points and the lead in the second set as the set had 12 tied scores and six lead changes. The set went extra points and the Lions had the advantage late in the set, but Lindenwood tied it at 30 and went on to win the set.
Sets three and four were all Southern as the Lions took a 10-9 lead midway through the set and would lead throughout. Set four saw Southern take a 4-3 lead early on and led from there on out.
Krishna Merriman had 18 kills, ten digs and hit .359, while Katie Politte had 13 kills, 12 digs and seven blocks.Callie Whetstone had 12 kills and ten blocks, while Monica White had 10 kills, nine blocks and hit .409 in the match. Katie Wiele had 20 digs, while Abby Finder had 44 assists and 13 digs.
Lindenwood had two in double-figure kills, led by 12 from Shannon Doyle.
Southern will be back in action on Oct. 14 with a match at Southwest Baptist. First-serve is slated for 7 pm.
