The Missouri Southern volleyball team came away with a five-set victory today as the Lions won at Northwest Missouri State, 3-2. Individual set scores were 16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-25 and 15-12.
The Lions (6-17, 3-12 MIAA) were led offensively by Katie Politte as the senior had 21 kills and 12 digs in the match. Alyx Gepford (pictured) had ten kills, seven blocks and 16 digs for her first career double-double, while Abby Finderdished out 40 assists, added nine digs and had four blocks. Callie Whestone had four kills and six blocks, but the five block assists she got moved her to 111 on the season, just four away from tying the single-season record at MSSU. Monica White added eight blocks.
Northwest (9-14, 6-9 MIAA) had two players with 16 kills each as Jackie Becker and Miranda Foster paced the Bearcats.
Southern fell 25-16 in the first set as the opener saw eight ties and six lead changes. The Lions took sets two and three by identical scores of 25-23, before the Bearcats forced the fifth and deciding set with a 25-15 win in the fourth.
Both teams traded points in the fifth set, but Northwest had an 8-7 lead at the turn. A kill from Gepford tied the set at nine and the set was again tied at ten and 11. A pair of points from the Lions, blocks from Whestone and Gepford, as well as a kill from Politte gave the Lions a 13-11 lead and Southern held on for the match win.
The Lions will be back in action this Tuesday as they play host to Central Oklahoma at 6 pm inside Young Gymnasium.
