MSSU spikers fall short in upset bid against Central Oklahoma

The Missouri Southern volleyball team took set two in extra points and started hot in set three, but couldn't pull off the upset as Central Oklahoma defeated the Lions three sets to one tonight inside Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 16-25, 26-24, 20-25 and 22-25.

The Lions (6-18, 3-13 MIAA) were led offensively by 17 kills and 11 digs from Katie Politte. Krishna Merriman had 14 kills and 10 digs, while Monica White (pictured) added ten kills of her own. Abby Finder dished out 41 assists and added 11 digs, while Katie Wiele had 21 digs. Callie Whetstone had three blocks, including two block assists, moving to within two from tying the single-season MSSU record.

UCO (23-4, 12-4 MIAA) had three register in double-figures for kills, led by 18 from Barbara Jackson. The Bronchos hit .271 in the match led by marks of .314 in set one and .350 in the final set.

Set one was close throughout the middle of the frame, as UCO held a 12-11 lead after a kill from Politte. The Bronchos, however, went on a 13-5 run to end the set.

The Bronchos led 17-10 in set two, before the Lions went on a 6-1 run to get within two (16-18) after a kill from Merriman, forcing a UCO timeout. The UCO lead was four (23-19), before five-straight points from the Lions, capped off by a block from Alyx Gepford gave Southern set point at 24-23. The Lions would get the set on an ace from Politte.

The Lions led 9-1 to open the third set, but UCO went on a 12-4 run to tie the set at 13. The set was tied again at 15 and 16, but UCO scored nine of the final 13 points to win the set.

In the final set, UCO jumped out to a 12-6 l ead and led 15-9, but the Lions came back getting to within two points at 21-23, but the Bronchos closed out the match on a kill from Jackson.

The Lions will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 31 when they play host to Emporia State at 6 pm.
