MSSU volleyball comeback against Southwest Baptist falls short

The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell behind two sets to none tonight and fought back to force a fifth set, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling three sets to two on the road. Individual set scores were 13-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 12-15.

Southern (5-14, 2-9 MIAA) fell behind 2-0 after the first two sets, but opened up the third set on an 8-1 run and lef 14-8 midway through the second set. SBU (7-12, 2-9 MIAA) got to within two (16-14) and cut the Lions' lead to just one (24-23), but a kill from Callie Whetstone ended the set.

The Lions led from start to finish in set four, leading 10-5 early on and 21-13 before putting the set away on a kill from Katie Politte.

In the fifth, SBU jumped out to a 4-3 lead before a kill from Whetstone tied the set at four. SBU led 8-7 at the turn, but a Bearcat error tied the set at eight and the same was the case, tying the set at nine. SBU went ahead 10-9 on the next rally and didn't look back, scoring six of the final nine points to take the match.

Politte had a match-high 19 kills as she added four digs and two blocks. Krishna Merriman had 16 kills and 18 digs, while Katie Wiele added 19 digs. Abby Finder had 44 assists and 13 digs, while Alyx Gepford had 13 digs. Whetstone had seven kills and four blocks.

The Lions will be back at home this weekend, playing host to Fort Hays on Friday and Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. First serve Friday evening is slated for 6 pm.
