MSSU volleyball falls to Fort Hays State

The Missouri Southern volleyball team took set one tonight, but visiting Fort Hays won the final three sets to take the match 3-1. Individual set scores were 25-20, 23-25, 24-26 and 18-25.

The Lions (5-15, 2-10 MIAA) were led by Krishna Merriman (pictured) with 18 kills and 11 digs, while Katie Politte had 15 kills and seven blocks. Abby Finder dished out 42 assists and added ten digs, while Katie Wiele had a match-high 21 digs. Callie Whetstone had nine blocks on the night and moved to within one block assist from tying the single-season MSSU record. She currently has 101.

Hays (8-12, 3-9 MIAA) were led by 15 kills from Mallory Flagor and 21 assists from Kristin Conor.

The Lions took set one and led from nearly the first serve. Southern opened up a 7-2 lead, forcing a Fort Hays timeout and the lead was 12-4, forcing another Tigers timeout. The Lions held on for the 25-20 lead.

Southern trailed 10-6 midway through the second set, but came back to take an 18-16 lead, forcing a FHSU timeout. The Lions led 21-18, but Hays scored seven of the final ten points to take the set.

The Lions had a 24-23 lead in set three, but Hays took the final three points to win the set and the Tigers controlled set four for the match.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow evening, as Southern plays host to Nebraska-Kearney at 5 pm inside Young Gymnasium.
