Missouri Southern football falls in three overtimes to Central Missouri

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Both Missouri Southern and Central Oklahoma scored on all of their overtime possessions, but the Bronchos converted on a two-point try on its final attempt and defeated the Lions 43-41 today inside Wantland Stadium.

Southern (2-4, 2-4 MIAA) led 7-0 at the half as a seven-yard run from Scot Lathrop, completed a 15-play, 88-yard drive that consumed 8:12 off the clock in the second quarter.

After holding the Bronchos (5-1, 5-1 MIAA) to just 89 yards of offense in the first half, UCO broke out and Jake Gandara tied the game on a 70-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the second half. Gandara put the Bronchos ahead 14-7 after the Lions failed to convert a fake punt on a fourth and one, giving the ball to UCO on the MSSU 22-yard line. Gandara rushed for 14 yards on the first play of the drive and then scored on an 8-yard rush.

The Lions tied the game at 14 on a seven-yard rush from Chris Barnwell that capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive. The Bronchos answered right back with a 13-play drive of their own to go ahead 21-14, but the Lions tied it right back with 1:18 left in the game when Giresse Forchu scored his second touchdown of the game, this time a three-yard dive into the endzone.

The game went into overtime for the second-straight week for the Lions and both teams scored on each of their possessions. The Lions scored first on a three-yard run from Barnwell, and Forchu and Shannon Saundersadded a six and two-yard run respectively.

UCO quarterback Chas Stallard hit Connor Pulley for his second score of the game and Stallard ran the ball in on the quarterback keeper to win the game.

Southern rushed for 405 yards and had a 470-392 advantage in total offense. Chris Jeffries had 70 yards on nine carries, while also catching one pass for 53 yards. Forchu had 65 yards and two scores, while Barnwell had two touchdowns on 28 yards and Lathrop and Saunders had a touchdown each.

Defensively, Johnquavious McBride had ten tackles. Eric Dago had eight tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage, while Kevin Gill and Gaige Washington had seven stops each. Laynce Sanders added a sack.

The Lions will be back in action next Saturday, playing host to Northeastern State at 2:07 pm inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium. The game will be the MIAA TV Game of the Week.
