MSSU women to play nationally ranked Pitt State today

The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team welcomes their second straight nationally ranked opponent into The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon as they host 11th ranked Pittsburg State at 1 p.m. on Robert Corn Court.

The Series
This is the 88th meeting between the rivals, the second most played series in Southern history. Pitt State holds a 46-41 advantage, with the Gorillas winning two of the last three. Pitt State holds a 26-17 advantage inside John Lance Arena, while Southern leads 23-19 in Joplin and the series is tied 1-1 on neutral courts.  In the last four meetings Pittsburg State holds a 3-1 advantage with the lone Southern win coming on Feb. 21, 2015 a 72-68 overtime win in Pittsburg. Southern's longest winning streak was eight games from December 12, 1974 thru February 24, 1978. Pitt State's longest winning streak was at 10 from January 28, 1998 thru February 13, 2002.

Ronnie Ressel is in his 15th year on the staff at Missouri Southern and his first year at the helm of the women's program. During his three years as an assistant for the women, Ressel had helped the team to a 58-30 record and a 38-22 mark in the MIAA. In 2015-16 the team saw two players earn All-MIAA status as Sharese Jones was a first-team selection, while Deb Holcomb was a third-team pick.

Lane Lord
 was hired as head women's basketball coach at Pittsburg State University in 2006. Lord brings a fast-paced, fan-friendly style of basketball to Pittsburg and with his proven track record of success, the future of Pitt State women's basketball is bright. He has a 183-89 (.673) record in his time with the Gorillas.
