The Pittsburg State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams enjoyed another successful day of action Saturday (Feb. 11) as the Gorillas wrapped up competition in the Second Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
The Pitt State women punctuated the end of the meet with the 4x400 meter relay team bursting to the fastest time in NCAA Division II this season in the final event of the evening.
The relay team of Alyssa Hammons, Emilyn Dearman, Rhema Taylor and Courtney Nelson turned in a fast time of 3 minutes, 42.73 seconds to establish a new school record en route to the nation's top Division II mark as well.
Dearman also posted the third fastest time in the 60 meter hurdles this season with a time of 8.55 seconds, while Imani Hutchinson posted the seventh fastest mark in D2 this season in the 60 meters (7.53).
In the shot put ring, Jasmine Smith won the event with a best throw of 51-1.75, which would rank fifth in Division II. She already owns the third-best mark this year – 51-1.75 from a week ago at the UCM Mule Relays. Jena Black also popped a big throw – 50-0.5 to place 2nd in the meet and 6th on the D2 indoor leaderboard.
Amira Jenkins had a season-best mark of 38-7.75 to play third in the triple jump and pick up an NCAA PQ mark.
Alyssa McCarthick earned a PQ mark with a best clearance of 11-10 in the invitational pole vault.
In the men's action, Ian Duncan earned an NCAA PQ mark with a winning clearance of 6-9.5 in the high jump. Kai Miller cleared 16-0 in the invitational pole vault to notch a PQ mark as well.
In the last race of the night, the men's 4x400m relay of Jared Page, Louis Rollins, Ira Hines and Slade Nordic secured a PQ mark with a time of 3:17.27.
Dominick Fonseca registered a personal-best time in the 3,000m with a time of 8:35.64. Noah Gfeller lowered his best time in the 800m (1:55.08) and Alexander Burson established a new PR in the mile with a time of 4:13.73.
