The Pittsburg State University baseball team will make its home debut Saturday (Feb. 11) when the Gorillas open a three-game series against the University of Sioux Falls. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (CST) Saturday at Al Ortolani Field and complete the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
The Cougars will be making their season debut against the Gorillas. USF posted a 21-30-1 record in 2016, including a 2-2 mark against Pitt State to open last year's campaign. The Gorillas defeated the Cougars 6-4 and 4-3 on Feb. 6, 2016, in Pittsburg, before falling by scores of 12-9 and 16-13 the next day.
Pitt State opened the 2017 a week ago with four games in Fort Smith, Ark. – two each against Ark.-Fort Smith and Henderson State. The Gorillas dropped all four games, falling 6-5 in 10 innings in the season opener to UAFS last Thursday (Feb. 2). HSU downed Pitt State, 4-2, on Feb. 3. The Gorillas then dropped a split doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 4) to HSU (9-2) and UAFS (8-2).
As a team, Pitt State is batting .210 on the season, while its opponents are hitting .211. The Gorillas pitching staff has a 4.72 ERA early in the season.
Junior outfielder Hunter Clanin leads the Pitt State offense through four games with a .375 batting average (6-16).
