The Missouri Southern baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Truman State today by the scores of 7-1 and 15-12.
Southern (6-2) got a great start from Seth Mesey (pictured) in game one as the junior went the distance and limited the Bulldogs to just two hits and one earned run. He struck out eight and walked one, while throwing just 89 pitches.
The Lions got a great day at the plate from Mike Million as he went 3-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Alec Alvarez went 2-2 with three runs driven in, while Max Hogan hit a home run, number four on the season. Todd Hinkley scored twice, while Walker Whitworth drove in a run.
Southern scored a run in the third on an RBI from Alvarez and Hogan got things started in the fourth with a homer to right. RBIs from Whitworth, Million and Alvarez highlighted the inning. Million and Alvarez had RBIs in the sixth for the Lions.
The Lions went down 5-1 in game two before Southern broke out for two in the third iand four in the fourth. Brett Graham had an RBI in the first, and Hogan's second home run of the day drove in two in the third. Hogan then had a bases-clearing triple in the fourth as part of a four-run inning.
After Truman (1-5) had scored two in the fifth, the Lions answered back with with a run in their half on a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Sutherland. Truman scored one more in the sixth to go on top 8-7, before three runs from the Lions in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the answer. Graham drove in Hogan on an RBI triple and scored on the same play when the relay throw was bobbled. Whitworth then added a home run to left.
The Lions added four more in the seventh on RBIs from Graham Dave Prost and Gorski.
Truman threatened with four in the eighth, but Cody Smith came in to close it out and earn his second save of the year. Sean Goostree pitched two and two thirds of an inning in relief, while Hayden Brauser threw an inning and a third to pick up win number two on the year.
Graham went 4-6 in the game with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Hogan went 3-4 with five driven in and three runs scored. Cory Canterbury went 2-5 with three runs scored, while Sutherland scored twice. Gorski went 2-4 with two RBIs.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with a double-header beginning at 1 pm.
