Lutgen hits three home runs, drives in 10 as MSSU softball wins 11-7

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Bentonville, Ark. - Freshman Erika Lutgen (pictured) set a Missouri Southern single game record and tied another as the Lions Softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the University of Arkansas-Monticello 8 State Classic Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park.

Lutgen got started things started early in the opening game of the day against University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS) when she belted a grand slam down the left field line to make it 4-0 Southern just five batters into the game. The Lions tacked on a fifth run later in the inning off a RBI double by senior Sydney Koch that scored sophomore Ashley Caldarella to make it 5-0. UIS scored a run in the bottom half of the frame with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.

After sending 10 to the plate in the first inning, Southern started the second with a ground out by junior Abi Corbett before a pair of singles from juniors Myranda Stewart and Shelby Friend put two aboard for Lutgen. And you guessed it Lutgen drove a three run shot over the left center field fence to make it 8-1. That home run gave Lutgen a tie for most RBIs in a single game with seven. The UIS Prairie Stars pushed a run across in the bottom of the second and plated two in the third to make it 8-4 headed into the fourth.

Stewart led off the fourth with a walk and Friend followed that with a single to left. Lutgen stepped into the batters box for the third time of the game and you guessed it UIS pitched to her. This time Lutgen took the pitch opposite field for a three run shot to right. That gave Lutgen the new school record for RBIs in a game with 10 and tied the school record for most home runs in a single game with three. The Prairie Stars managed to score a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to make the final 11-7. Lutgen came up again in the sixth inning, but was promptly walked by the UIS pitcher.

Sophomore Taurean Guzman pitched four innings in relief to record the win allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits with three strike outs. Koch got the start for Southern but lasted just one third of an inning allowing one run, earned, on one hits and walked two. Freshman Mikaela Cox pitched two and two-thirds in relief allowing three runs, all unearned, on four hits with a walk.

In the second game of the day Southern faced off with 24th ranked Missouri-St. Louis and came out on the wrong end of a run rule. Lutgen provided the lone offensive highlight for the Lions with a solo lead off home run in the fifth as the Tritons came away with the 11-1 victory.
