Madison Northcutt posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead a balanced Pittsburg State University attack as the No. 10 Gorillas held off upset-minded Southwest Baptist University, 69-63, Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Meyer Sports Complex.
The win kept Pitt State (21-3, 13-2 MIAA) alone atop the MIAA standings. The Gorillas gained sole possession of first place following ninth-ranked Central Oklahoma's 55-52 road loss to Nebraska-Kearney Thursday (Feb. 9).
The Gorillas trailed SBU (14-10, 6-9 MIAA) 55-54 with 6:03 to play in the game.
Burgess hit a 3-pointer to give Pitt State a 57-55 and Brenlee McPherson added another 3-pointer to extend the lead to 60-55 with 5:01 to go.
The Bearcats rallied to pull within a point, 62-61, but Hadyn Herlocker buried a 3-pointer with 1:22 to go that put the Gorillas back up four, 65-61. Lungwitz effectively sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 27 ticks remaining that made it a 67-61 game.
The Gorillas overcame a 41 percent shooting outing (26-63) thanks to 11 3-pointers. Pitt State outscored SBU, 33-3, from distance as the Bearcats made just one of nine long range attemtps compared to the Gorillas' 11 of 28 shooting clip.
Herlocker added nine points and a game-high 11 assists for the Gorillas.
Pitt State will return home to John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court to face MIAA rival Northwest Missouri State University next Thursday (Feb. 16) at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
