MSSU men's track and field breaks records at Warrensburg

Warrensburg, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern men's track and field team saw a pair of records fall Friday as the Lions competed at both Central Missouri and Nebraska in a pair of pre-conference meet tune-ups.

At Nebraska, Vincent Kiprop shattered the previous MSSU 5k record by 15 seconds as the sophomore won the event by more than a minute in a time of 13:53.94. The time is an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and is tops in Division II by nine seconds. Also in that race, Tyler Rush was third with a time of 14:58.94.

In other action at Nebraska, Cody Berry placed sixth in the 3k in a time of 8:44.08, while Nickson Kiptoo was 11th and Jared Haltom placed 15th.

At Central Missouri, broke the MSSU shot put record for the third time this year, this time nearly eclipsing 60 feet as he threw a provisional distance of 59-11.75 to win the event. The throw ranks second-best in the country this year in Division II and is tops in the MIAA by over a foot and a half.

Burns also picked up a provisional in the weight throw as he placed fifth with a distance of 58-06.50. Garrett Austin was ninth.

Brendan Watkins was second in the triple jump with a distance of 45-05.75, while Matt Williams won the 600 yard run in a time of 1:15.54. Victor Encarnacion was second in the race, while Colton Gurera placed third.

Keson Payton was sixth in the finals of the 60m dash in a time of 7.09, while Willis ws second in the hurdles in a time of 8.39.

Cody Vogt won the high jump with a height of 6-07.50, while Chance Johnson placed fifth. Dean Howard and Cortland Potter placed fourth and fifth in the pole vault as Howard vaulted to a provisional height of 15-04.25.

In the long jump, Jordyn Manier (21-09.50) and Johnson (21-06.25) placed second and third, while Mike Watson was sixth.

Southern will be back in action next weekend as the Lions play host to the 2017 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will take place on Friday through Sunday inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
