CJ Carr broke a 17-year old record for assists in a game and the Missouri Southern men's basketball team defeated visiting Pittsburg State 88-70 tonight in front of more than 2,000 fans at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (14-8, 8-5 MIAA) had five score in double-figures, led by Carr's 17-point, 16-assist night. The 16 assists is the most-ever in a single-game at MSSU, breaking Eddin Santiago's reocrd of 15 set in 2000. JJ Cratit had 17 points, all in the second half, while Lawrence Brown had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kinzer Lambert had 15 points, while Elyjah Clark scored ten.
Pittsburg State (4-17, 2-11 MIAA) was led by 19 points from Jordan Phelps.
The Gorillas led by six on multiple occasions in the first half the last coming at 23-17 with 9:17 left. The PSU lead was 28-23 with 7:24 to go before a 7-0 run from the Lions gave Southern a 30-28 lead with 6:07 to go. A three-point play from Dexter Frisbie made the score 35-34 with two minutes left and a layup from Parker Jennings gave the Lions a three point lead with 1:30 to go. Pitt tied the game with a three and the team's traded baskets as the halftime score stood tied at 39.
Southern opened up the second half on a 9-0 run to lead 48-39 after a three from Cratit with 17:29 left. Pitt cut the lead to two (54-52) with 12:46 left, but the Lions went on a 9-1 run to lead by ten (63-53) with just under ten to go. The lead was 18 (74-56) after a pair of freebies from Carr with 7:17 to go, and a three from Jennings, off the record-breaking assist from Carr provided the final tally.
Southern shot 54 percent from the field in the game (66 percent in the second half) and 73 percent from the free throw line. The Gorillas shot 43 percent from the field. The Lions had a 37-28 advantage on the boards, and the Lions scored 20 points off of 15 PSU turnovers.
Southern will be back in action on Feb. 9 as the Lions head to Southwest Baptist. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm.
