MSSU volleyball falls to Emporia State

The Missouri Southern volleyball team took the first two sets tonight, but Emporia State came-from-behind to win the final three and the Lions fell 3-2 inside White Auditorium. Individual set scores were 29-27, 25-20, 18-25, 17-25, and 11-15.

The Lions (4-11, 1-6 MIAA) went down 17-12 in the opening set and trailed at 22-19 and again at 24-21, but Southern fought back and tied the set at 24 on a block from Callie Whetstone and Krishna Merriman. Emporia went up again 27-26, forcing set point, but three-straight scores from the Lions gave Southern the first set.

The Lions trailed for most of the second set, but a kill from Katie Politte gave Southern a 16-15 lead. A kill from Whestone made the lead 19-18, Southern, and back-to-back kills from Monica White and Politte gave the Lions a 22-18 lead, forcing an ESU (6-6, 2-5 MIAA). A kill from Politte ended the set.

Emporia led from nearly start to finish in the third set and never trailed in the fourth set, forcing the fifth and deciding set.

The Lions led 8-6 at the turn in set five and led again 10-8 late, but Emporia went on a 7-1 run to end the set and take the match.

Politte had a match-high 17 kills and led the Lions attack that saw three in double-figures for kills. Politte added 17 digs for the double-double. Whetstone had 13 kills and eight blocks, while Merriman added 13 kills, 20 digs and six blocks. Abby Finder had 40 assists and 13 digs, while Katie Wiele and Cheyanne Crandall had 23 and 16 digs, respectively.

Emporia had four in double-figures with digs.

The Lions wil be back in action tomorrow evening with a match at seventh ranked Washburn. First serve is slated for 6 pm.
