MSSU soccer loses in double overtime

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern Lions (3-5-1, 1-4-0 MIAA) dropped a 1-0 double overtime heart breaker to the Missouri Western Griffons (4-4-1, 1-3-1 MIAA) Thursday night at wet and soggy Hal Bodon Field.

The Lions and Missouri Western were just about as evenly matched as you could get both teams recorded 12 shots each through regulation and the first overtime. Western scored the golden goal with a minute and 48 seconds left as Tara Russell beat the Southern goalie 1v1 off a cross from Katie Kempf.

Freshman Hannah Bomar led the way for Southern with four shots, while junior Kacie Hulse took three. Freshman Taylor Beck and junior Kayla Gajewski added two shots each.

Senior Beth Hammons played all 108:12 of the match in between the posts as she recorded 10 saves while facing 16 shots from Missouri Western.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday as they host Northwest Missouri at 11am at Hal Bodon Field.
