The Missouri Southern volleyball team nearly pulled off the upset, but 15th ranked Central Missouri came-from-behind to win the fifth and deciding set tonight to take the match three sets to two. Individual set scores were 17-25, 16-25, 25-21, 28-26 and 14-16.
The Lions (4-13, 1-8 MIAA) dropped the first two sets as Central Missouri (11-7, 8-1 MIAA) hit .517 in the opener and .636 in set two to go up two sets to none.
Southern, however, opened up the third set on a 5-2 run, but the Jennies came back and led 12-11. A UCM service error tied the set and the Lions went ahead 14-12 on another UCM error. The two teams traded points, before the Lions went up 18-16 and would not trail from there on out in the set.
The fourth set saw the Lions come-from-behind in the frame. Central led 18-10 at one point, but a 10-2 run tied the set at 20. The Lions went down 24-22, but three straight points gave Southern set point at 25-24. The set was tied at 27, but a pair of blocks from Callie Whetstone, Abby Finder and Katie Politte gave set four to the Lions and forced the final frame.
The Lions led 4-1 in the fifth and took an 8-6 lead at the turn. Southern went ahead 13-10 and forced a Central timeout, but the Jennies made their move at that point. UCM went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-13 lead and won the set in extra points 16-14.
Krishna Merriman had 15 kills and nine digs in the match to go with six blocks. Politte had 13 kills and 12 digs, while Abby Finder had 42 assists and 13 digs. Callie Whetstone had 11 kills and 15 blocks on the night.
Central had three in double-figure kills led by 26 from Carly Sojka.
The Lions, as a team had a season-high 18 blocks and after held the Jennies to attack percentages of .095, -.041 and .000 in the final three sets.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow evening as the Lions play host to Lindenwood University. First-serve from Young Gymnasium is slated for 6 pm.
