MSSU volleyball drops two in Washburn Tournament

The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a pair of matches today in the opening day of the 2015 Washburn Invitational in Topeka.

The Lions opened the day with a match against Drury and the Lions ran into a good hitting Lady Panthers squad. Drury (1-0) hit .300 in the final set to put the Lions (0-2) away three sets to none. Individual set scores were 10-25, 13-25 and 20-25.

Callie Whetstone had eight kills and hit .286, while Monica White had nine kills and hit .250 in the match. Abby Finderdished out 19 assists and Katie Wiele added 13 digs.

In Southern's second match of the day, the Lions fell three sets to none against Black Hills State (1-1). Individual set scores were 20-25, 17-25 and 20-25.

The Lions hit .150 in the opening set, but hit just .083 in the second frame and couldn't complete the late comeback in the finale.

Bridgette Jaeger led the team with ten kills and 15 digs, whileLauren Darby had six kills and Finder dished out 21 assists. Wiele had 13 digs.

Southern will finish the tournament tomorrow as the Lions will take on South Dakota Mines and Augustana.
