Maryville, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern football team picked up a late touchdown, but the Lions fell 48-7 on the road at 4th ranked Northwest Missouri inside a wet Bearcat Stadium.
Southern (0-2, 0-2 MIAA) picked up 155 total yards in the game. Jay Hadley had 34 yards rushing and a touchdown, while TJ Fleeton threw for 95 yards.
Northwest Missouri (2-0, 2-0 MIAA) was led by Brady Bolles as the senior quarterback rushed for 60 yards and a score, while throwing for 275 yards on 17-36 and four touchdowns. Shane Williams caught six passes for 106 yards and two scores.
The Lions had troubles moving the ball against the Northwest Missouri defense in the first half as Southern managed just 55 yards in the half.
The Bearcats scored first when Simon Mathiesen connected on a 22-yard field goal with 10:50 left in the first quarter. Bolles picked up a 24-yard touchdown run with 7:11 left in the quarter, while he hooked up with George Sehl on a six-yard pass to put the Bearcats up 17-0 with 11:03 in the half.
On the next drive, Fleeton hooked up with Michael Nelson for an 11-yard gain, but the Lions were forced to punt. However, the Southern defense came up big as Johnquavious McBrideintercepted a Bolles' pass.
A 34-yard field goal from Mathiesen with 1:29 left in the second quarter would provide the final first-half score and the Bearcats led 20-0 at the break. .
Neither team scored on its first possession in the second half and it looked as if the Northwest defense would provide the first points, but a roughing the passer negated a pick six giving the Lions the ball back. However, the Bearcats got the ball back on an interception by Kevin Berg with 10:45 left in the third quarter.
A 22-yard touchdown pass from Bolles to Williams gave the Bearcats a 27-0 lead with 6:09 left in the third quarter.
A big play for the Lions in the third came when Fleeton hooked up with Jordan Morrison for a 15-yard catch, but another roughing the passer on Northwest Missouri gave the Lions another 15 yards, putting the ball inside the Northwest 40-yard line. However, an interception by Fleeton would give Northwest the ball back at the Bearcats' eight-yard line. A big pass from Bolles, followed by another touchdown pass for him, this time to Marquese Surrell, made the score 34-0, Northwest.
Back-to-back-to-back fumbles by each team on successive plays, the second time the Lions' McBride came up with the recovery, however Northwest came up with the last fumble recovery inside MSSU territory. On the very next play, Bolles hooked up with Williams for a touchdown pass.
Southern got on the board late in the fourth when Fleeton hooked up for two big passes to Dakota Turner and Chad Nolan putting the Lions inside the Bearcats' ten-yard line. Hadley finished off the drive with a five-yard touchdown run to make the score 48-7, Northwest with 3:18 left to play.
Defensively, Caleb Domingue led the Lions with nine tackles, while McBride had eight stops, seven solo, while adding a fumble recovery and an interception. James Wooten had a sack, while Kyjuan Tate had eight tackles and a forced fumble. The Lions had four tackles for a loss, including a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
Southern will be back in action next Saturday, September 19, when the Lions play host to Nebraska-Kearney at 6 pm inside Hughes Stadium at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex. The game will be part of Hall of Fame Weekend as the Lions induct four into the hall, including former football player Josh Chapman.
